Into Darkness shows more racial diversity among cameos from alien species than it does among human characters in main speaking roles. Worse still, iconic Star Trek villain Khan Noonien Singh was recast as Benedict Cumberbatch, possibly the whitest man on the planet.
In Khan’s original role, he was super-intelligent, super-strong, the head of a genetically engineered master race—and brown. In other words, the opposite of the usual racial stereotypes one saw in mid-20th century “foreign” or “exotic” villains. Whitewashing Khan into being an posh-sounding Englishman reinforces the message sent out by Kirk, Spock, and the morally ambiguous Admiral Marcus: Good or evil, everyone in power is a white male. Suddenly, the awkwardness surrounding one of John Cho’s publicity interviews makes sense. “Who is your favourite villain?” he is asked. “Ricardo Montalban,” he answers. “He was badass. Representation matters. Star Trek is proof of that. Kirk and Uhura famously shared US TV’s first interracial kiss, and Uhura went on to inspire the first black female astronaut to go into space. A nice critique - especially the observation of the utter white maleness of power in this reboot universe.

Yeah. This shit. I enjoyed the movie, don’t get me wrong, but yeesh.

Also if you’re going to leave in that underwear scene and then cut Benedict’s topless scene, you have no fucking clue how many people went to that movie specifically to see him.

Good analysis. Unlike many of my online friends, I loved Into Darkness. That doesn’t make any of these criticisms about its racial and gender representation one iota less valid. I would have loved it more if there had been more women (who had less man-centered storylines), more non-whites, and if Benedict’s villain was a new character rather than taking over a role originally written as a PoC. (Though I will add that Ricardo Montalban wasn’t from India either. He was Mexican, and at least in TWOK looked to me more like a tanned white guy than a southeast Asian person. I am aware that my white privilege plays a role in my assessment. Anyway, we really should aim to be significantly less racist than the 1960s.)
